"Clytie " fue la segunda imagen de ese título pintada por leighton . la ninfa clytie se enamora de apolo, el dios del sol, pero es rechazado por él. . Ella toma una posición en un lugar remoto y permanece allí sin comer ni beber y sacando su único alimento de sus lágrimas. . Día tras día, ella ve a su antiguo amante conducir su carro de este a oeste por el cielo . Su cabello se vuelve salvaje , su carne pálida, excepto donde todavía es calentada por el sun’s rayos . Eventualmente ella se arraiga al suelo , sus extremidades y cuerpo se convierten en el tallo de una planta y su rostro se convierte en un girasol que siempre sigue a apolo mientras hace su viaje diario por el cielo . Leighton comenzó su segunda versión en 1895 . Explicó la foto a un visitante poco antes de su muerte. : ‘I han mostrado a la diosa en adoración antes del sol poniente , cuyos últimos rayos están impregnando todo su ser . Con los brazos levantados, está rogando a su amado que no abandone her' .
